Time Line
I’ve been thinking a lot about time lines lately. Barney Stinson posted in his blog that he has no intention of being in a monogamous relationship for “at least the next 7 years”. I’m not really sure how Barney came up with this number. I think it’s something to do with the number of years that he was in a monogamous relationship with one person. I had another friend who used to explain her year requirements for how things would move in a relationship. Since she’s getting married in the near future I venture to say that her time line has been totally shortened/thrown out the window. And, I couldn’t be happier for her.
So about these time lines, why put these odd year limits on things? Okay, I understand not getting into another serious relationship for about a year after ending a long term relationship. I don’t understand making rules that involve 5-7 years. It seems so limiting. It seems like you might just miss someone or something amazing because you have these n-year rules. I guess I have no problem with time lines if you’re perfectly willing to throw them out the door at any given moment. But then, what’s the point of having them. I mean you could just say I’m not really into having a relationship for the foreseeable future. I dunno. It just seems like when love gets involved time goes out the window.
