| Obama just nominated Sonia Sotomayor to be the next Supreme Court justice. I don’t know much about her. In fact, I basically know nothing about her. But I like the idea of her because she’s more like me. She’s female, Catholic, from a non-privileged background, well educated, and at least has qualifications for the job. It’s just something about having a qualified woman nominated that feels so nice.I guess it’s not just that she’s a woman. When Miers was nominated I was horrified since she seemed so incredibly unqualified. In fact, as a woman I was a little insulted. It’s almost as if it was a statement. We want to have a woman and this was as good as we could do. Which is blatantly not true. But still, I have to admit that I’m biased. I want to see people more like me doing things that make a difference or holding positions of power. It’s definitely the reason I’m so interested in gender equality in the sciences. I just want more people that are like me around. Maybe it’s a little silly but I think it’s natural. It just feels better. And maybe, in the end, I guess I have to admit that I’m just a little biased. |
