Subway Ride Intervention
Right now I am riding on the train. Free Wi-fi on public transportation is the best! I took the subway to get to the train. I was standing on a mostly full car thinking how living in a city can be good for one’s mood. Instead of feeling alone and isolated as you drive in to work for an early morning meeting, you can see all the other people who are doing the exact same thing. And most of the time, they look as tired and as miserable as you do! While I was people watching I noticed a guy who was probably in his mid 20’s reading the Eye of the World by Robert Jordan. I wanted to stage a subway intervention. I read that book the first time when I was 13-14. It’s not a horrible book for what it is, pulp fantasy. The real problem is that the book is the first in a series that is currently 12 books in. The middle of the series is not very good and the author is dead. Why would anyone start this book now? Granted the writer hired to finish the series is *very* good and someone I really like. But, I gave up reading the books years ago.
I wanted to pull this poor guy away from the book and say, “No stop! Save yourself. I mean Jordan is d-e-a-d! Go read any number of other pulp fantasy novels and spare yourself the middle of this series. Trust me it’s not worth it.”
Luckily for everyone on the train the guy was wearing headphones.
